What’s in your Toy Box? A Guide to BDSM Toys

Whether you're an experienced kinkster or a newbie, you probably know BDSM involves some apparatus for teasing, pleasing, and causing a little pain. But where should you start? What are some of the basic “toys” that every dom/sub should own?

It is important to keep in mind here that if you will be playing with multiple partners, any implements that come into bodily fluids should be properly sterilized between uses. We suggest a good toy cleaner like WET Keep It Clean Toy Cleaner because it is safe to use on latex, rubber and silicone. Boiling is always a good way to get your toys clean if they are solid and able to withstand the hot water (but always do this at your own discretion and care, and be sure to first check if you toy is boil safe). For things that can’t be properly sterilized (leather, whips, anything porous, etc.), it is always better to be safe than sorry. Have your own set of toys that are only used on you. If you are a sub, have your own toy box. This way you are in control of the cleanliness of your toys and you minimize the risk of contamination.

Now, on to the fun stuff! So, what should you have in your basic BDSM toy box?

Cuffs: Simple enough, right? Cuffs come in a variety of materials to suit your taste, whether you prefer soft and fuzzy or the cold feeling of metal against skin, there’s a cuff out there to suit your preference. Cuffs are much easier to manage for bondage than ropes are. Ropes take a lot of patience and practice; cuffs let you get right to the action and are easier to remove when your sub has had enough.

Collar and Leash: Keep your sub in check, have them wear a collar and attach a leash to it. Make sure the collar is wide, at least two inches, so that it is comfortable on their neck and doesn't dig in. Tight collars need to be avoided, slip two fingers in between the subs neck and the collar to make sure there is plenty of wiggle room and the collar won't injure the sub's neck or skin. Check and make sure the inside of the collar (the part that will be in contact with the skin) has no rough spots, metal grommets, or exposed Velcro. The neck is extremely delicate and any of these could seriously hurt your sub. We suggest this Punishment – Purple Suede Bondage Collar because it's made of high quality leather that is smooth and will stand up to many rough play sessions.

Eye Mask: Try sensory deprivation. A great way to feel in command of your sub is to keep them in the dark with an eye mask. Not knowing what you’ll do next will heighten the experience for both of you.

Vibrator: What's pain without the pleasure? Vibrators are great on men's or women's bodies! We suggest the Lux Male Stimulator – LX 3+. While the name claims it’s for men, it is a great unisex vibrating toy that can be used anywhere thanks it it’s 100% play area.
